Bazuin et al developed simple rules that can be used to screen for nutrient deficiencies after bariatric surgery. This can make testing more cost efficient. The authors are from Catharina Hospital Eindhoven in The Netherlands/
Patient selection: history of laparoscopic roux-Y gastric bypass or sleeve gastrectomy
Outcome: detect nutrient deficiency
Parameters:
(1) preoperative vitamin D in nmol/L
(2) season of year
(3) current serum folate in nmol/L
(4) preoperative ferritin in µg/L
(5) current MCV in femtoliters
(6) hemoglobin in g/dL
(7) gender
Screening Test Result
Measure
vitamin D < 50 nmol/L in winter or < 70 nmol/L in summer (little or lots of sunlight)
vitamin D
current folate <= 35 nmol/L
vitamin B12
current folate <= 25 nmol/L
vitamin B1 and vitamin B6
current folate > 25 nmol/L AND hemoglobin <= 13.7 g/dL in male
vitamin B1
current folate > 25 nmol/L AND hemoglobin <= 12 g/dL in female
vitamin B1
preoperative ferritin <= 75 µg/L
serum ferritin
preoperative ferritin > 75 µg/L AND MCV <= 80 fL
serum ferrritin
