In order to minimize risk in malpractice litigation, the physician should:
(1) practice within the scope of expertise, training and experience
(2) maintain clinical competency
(3) perform only those procedures for which privileges have been granted
(4) exceed privileges only in the event of an emergency
(5) refer to the appropriate specialist when involved in complicated or difficult cases
(6) provide care which complies with accepted national standards
(7) maintain documentation that is accurate, timely, complete and legible
(8) date and time orders and clinical notes
(9) provide informed consent, with concerns and comments of patient documented
(10) accessible to and compatible with the patient and family.
