Description

Wallgren et al reference the BAS 90-30-90 score to screen for sepsis. The authors are from the Karolinska Institutet in Sweden.

BAS is an acronym based on terms for vital signs in Swedish.

Interpetation:

• minimum score: 0

• maximum score: 3

• The higher the score the more significant the physiologic impact.

• A score >= 1 is considered positive.

Performance:

• Wallgren et al found that the BAS screen was insensitive in the prehospital setting (43%). Increasing the number of items to make the screen positive would reduce sensitivity but probably increase specificity.

• One problem with assessing performance of a prehospital screen is that the reference is status in the Emergency Department which may be some time later. A patient with significant sepsis can deteriorate in that time.
