Description

The National Lipid Association (NLA) has listed criteria for when to suspect familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) in a patient.


Parameters

(1) serum LDL cholesterol

(2) serum non HDL-cholesterol

 

Age

LDL-Cholesterol

Non-HDL-Cholesterol

< 20 years

>= 160 mg/dL

>= 190 mg/dL

>= 20 years

>= 190 mg/dL

>= 220 mg/dL

 

In the general population the following serum LDL-Cholesterol concentrations are associated with an 80% probability of familial hypercholesterolemia.

 

Age

LDL-Cholesterol

< 20 years

>= 190 mg/dL

20 to 29 years

>=220 mg/dL

>= 30 years

>= 250 mg/dL

 

Additional information to collect:

(1) family history of high cholesterol

(2) premature coronary artery disease (< 55 years in males, < 65 years in females)

(3) tendon xanthomas

(4) arcus corneae at age < 45 years

(5) tuberous xanthomas or xanthelasma at age < 20 years
