Description

Vasunilashorn et al used serum C-reactive protein (CRP) to screen older adults for risk of postoperative delirium. The authors are from Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Harvard Medical School, Brown University, Brigham and Women's Hospital and Massachusetts General Hospital.

Patient selection: age >= 70 years of age, following major noncardiac surgery

CRP Assay: ELISA method, R&D Systems

Delirium can be measured by frequency, severity and duration.

Risk factors for postoperative delirium:

(1) preoperative CRP >= 3 mg/L (relative risk 1.5)

(2) postoperative day 2 CRP >= 177 mg/L (highest 2 quartiles, relative risk 1.5)
