A number of behaviors can reduce the risk of illness and injury.


Behaviors that may reduce the risk of illness and injury:

(1) awareness of family health history

(2) up-to-date record of medications

(3) adherence to medications

(4) adherence to other clinical instructions

(5) have appropriate vaccinations

(6) awareness of adverse effects of any alternative therapies being taken

(7) precautions when taking sedating drugs

(8) use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and safety equipment

(9) avoid prolonged sun exposure and use of tanning beds

(10) protect eyes from UV

(11) protect back and joints

(12) screen the home for fall risk

(13) regular dental exams

(14) regular eye exams

(15) have a primary care provider

(16) measure blood pressure

(17) report clinical problems when they arise (not delayed)

(18) avoid excessive alcohol

(19) avoid substance abuse

(20) avoid or stop smoking

(21) be attentive and avoid distractions while driving

(22) maintain vehicles

(23) watch and maintain a healthy weight

(24) exercise regularly

(25) eat a balanced diet

(26) restrict salt intake

(27) restrict sugar intake

(28) get sufficient sleep

(29) screen for obstructive sleep apnea

(30) maintain social and emotional support

(31) take time for relaxation

(32) respond to depression or anxiety

(33) take appropriate care when traveling

(34) follow precautions if immunosuppressed

(35) have emergency supplies

(36) screen for radon risk

(37) appropriate screening for common cancers (colon, breast, etc)
