The prognostic score of Tuysuz et al can be used to determine the mortality risk in children with pediatric meningococcal disease.
Patient population:
(1) children from 20 days to 14 years admitted to a University Hospital in Istanbul, Turkey
(2) patients had meningococcal septicemia and/or meningitis
Unfavorable Prognostic Factor |

where:
• hypotension = systolic blood pressure < 5th percentile for age
• disturbed consciousness = sensorial variability between somnolence and coma
• meningitis = presence of clinical signs and > 100 leukocytes per µL in CSF, or positive CSF culture and smear
prognostic score =
= SUM (values for unfavorable prognostic factors present)
Interpretation:
• minimum score: 0
• maximum score: 9
