Description

Whitlock et al developed a score for predicting readmission within 30-days following discharge from the hospital for an episode of acute pancreatitis. This can help to identify a patient who may benefit from more aggressive management. The authors are from Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston.

Patient selection: discharge from the hospital for acute pancreatitis

Outcome: unplanned readmission within 30 days

Parameters:

(1) diet

(2) gastrointestinal symptoms (nausea, vomiting, diarrhea)

(3) pancreatic necrosis (on contrast-enhanced CT or magnetic resonance imaging during hospitalization)

(4) therapy with antibiotics

(5) pain

• minimum score: 0

• maximum score: 11

• The higher the score the greater the risk for readmission.
