Description

Saito et al reported a simple score for identifying a patient who may fail facemask ventilation. The patient may also experience difficulties with intubation and ventilation via a supraglottic airway. The authors are from multiple institutions in Japan and Singapore.

Patient selection: preoperative

Parameters:

(1) sex

(2) age of the patient in years

A patient at high risk may experience difficulties in:

(1) intubation

(2) facemask ventilation

(3) ventilation via a supraglottic airway

Performance:

• The area under the ROC curve was 0.71 for difficult facemask ventilation.

• The area under the ROC curve was 0.81 for difficult intubation and supraglottic airway ventilation.
