Description

Martinez-Gimeno et al developed a score for predicting the risk of cervical lymph node metastases in a patient with a squamous cell carcinoma of the oral cavity. This can help to identify a patient who may benefit from more aggressive management. the authors are from Hospital General Gregorio Maranon and Hospital Nuestra Senora de la Candelaria in Madrid, Spain.

Patient selection: squamous cell carcinoma of the oral cavity

Outcome: cervical lymph node metastasis

Parameter:

(1) T category

(2) tumor thickness in mm

(3) intravascular invasion

(4) perineural spread

(5) grade of differentiation

(6) tumor interphase (margin)

(7) inflammatory response

= SUM(points for all 7 parameters)

Interpretation:

• minimum score: 7

• maximum score: 30

• The higher the score the greater the risk of lymph node metastases.
