Description

Corso et al reported a scoring system for collection of stem cells from peripheral blood in patients with multiple myeloma. This can help to predict the yield of the mobilizing procedure. The authors are from the University of Pavia and IRCCS Policlinico San Matteo in Italy.

Procedure: stem cell collection from peripheral blood

Patient selection: multiple myeloma

Stem cell mobilization protocol: high-dose cyclophosphamide followed by G-CSF 48 hours after chemotherapy

Cut-off for CD34+ cells: 2 * 10^6 per kg body weight

Parameters:

(1) WBC count

(2) platelet count

(3) prior exposure to melphalan (alkylating agents)

(4) interval in months since the start of treatment
