Description

Calvo et al developed a score for predicting recurrence of anterior instability of the shoulder after arthroscopic treatment. This can help to identify a patient who may benefit from open surgery. The authors are from Fundacion Jimenez Diaz in Madrid, Spain.

Patient selection: anterior instability of the shoulder

Parameters:

(1) age in years

(2) ligamentous laxity

(3) Type 2 fracture of the anterior glenoid rim (fracture involving 16-30% of the anterior glenoid rim)

(4) post-operative participation in overhead and/or contact sports

= SUM(points for all 4 parameters)

Interpretation:

• minimum score: 0

• maximum score: 8

• The higher the score the greater the risk for recurrence of the anterior instability.

• A score >= 2 has a sensitivity of 91% and specificity of 74% for recurrence, with probability of 44%.
