Description

Battersby et al reported a score for neonatal necrotizing enterocolitis (NNEC). This can be interpreted together with the gestational age to determine risk. The authors are from multiple sites in England and members of the UK Neonatal Collaborative Necrotising Enterocolitis Study Group.

Patient selection: neonate

Outcome: neonatal necrotizing enterocolitis

Parameters:

(1) abdominal discoloration

(2) abdominal tenderness

(3) increased and/or bilious aspirates

(4) abdominal distention

(5) pneumoperitoneum

(6) fixed loop

(7) portal venous gas

(8) blood in the stool

(9) pneumatosis

Interpretation:

• minimum score: 0

• maximum score: 9

• The higher the score the greater the chances of NEC.

• The cutoff for NEC varies with gestational age at birth.
