Description

Andres et al reported a score for predicting the risk of complications following an elective liver resection. This can help to identify a patient who may benefit from more aggressive management or an alternative therapy. The authors are from Geneva University Hospitals in Switzerland.

Patient selection: elective liver resection

Parameters:

(1) ASA classification

(2) number of hepatic segments resected

(3) diagnosis of resected liver lesion

where:

• Although ASA 5 is included in scoring, none were included in the study and it is unlikely that surgery would be elective.

• 60% of patients were ASA 2 and 15% ASA 3. Either the case mix had a very favorable population, or there may be some leniency in ASA classification.

Interpretation:

• minimum score: 0

• maximum score: 3

• The higher the score the greater the risk for complications.

Mortality was 0.7%. A wide range of complications occurred including infection, pleural effusion, organ failure, etc.
