Suissa et al reported the Score for Targeting of Atrial Fibrillation (STAF) as a means to detect atrial fibrillation following stroke. This can help to identify a patient who may benefit from anticoagulation. The authors are from Hopital Pasteur in Nice, France.
Patient selection: recent stroke
Parameters:
(1) age in years
(2) baseline NIHSS score
(3) left atrial dilatation
(4) vascular etiology to stroke

Interpretation:
• minimum score: 0
• maximum score: 8
• A score >= 5 indicates a high risk for atrial fibrillation (sensitivity 89%, specificity 88%).
• A score >= 3 was 100% sensitive.
Performance:
• The area under the ROC curve is 0.94.
