The extent of pulmonary involvement in a viral pneumonia can be graded in lung CT images.
Patient selection: viral pneumonia
Lung zones graded:
(1) left upper zone (above the carina)
(2) left middle zone (between the carina and the inferior pulmonary vein)
(3) left lower zone (below the inferior pulmonary vein)
(4) right upper zone
(5) right middle zone
(6) right lower zone
Each region is score from 0 to 4 based on the percentage involvement.

Interpretation:
• minimum score: 0
• maximum score: 24
Diffuse involvement of both lung fields may indicate acute respiratory distress syndrome.
