Description

A patient with an acetabular fracture may have injury to the sciatic nerve.


Injuries to the sciatic nerve may be:

(1) peroneal palsy

(2) combined peroneal and tibial palsy

 

Risk factors for sciatic nerve injury:

(1) displaced acetabular fracture

(2) posterior dislocation of the femoral head

(3) iatrogenic injury

 

Manifestations:

(1) foot drop

(2) paresthesia

(3) pain

 

Isolated, mild injury to the peroneal nerve has a good prognosis.

Severe injury of the peroneal nerve may have a persistent deficit.
