Description

A nephropathy may affect patients with severe schistosomiasis.


Most patients have either Schistosoma japonicum or Schistosoma mansoni

 

Clinical features:

(1) other evidence of schistosomiasis is common, often hepatosplenomegaly

(2) proteinuria, including nephrotic syndrome

 

Causes of renal involvement:

(1) immune complex deposition

(2) cryoglobulinemia

 

Patterns of glomerular involvement include:

(1) membrano-proliferative

(2) mesangial

(3) focal segmental sclerosis

(4) crescentic
