Chronic schistosomiasis may be associated with cancer of the urinary bladder.
Species: Schistosoma haematobium
Mechanism: chronic cystitis, with possible release of toxic metabolites
Risk factors:
(1) long-term infection, typically acquired during childhood
(2) heavy infection
(3) urothelial hyperplasia in response to the infection
The diagnosis requires exclusion of other causes for bladder cancer such as chemical exposures.
