Description

Schistosomiasis has been implicated in a number of cancers in endemic regions, including colon cancer.


Species: Schistosoma japonicum

 

The duration of infection is important with many patients acquiring infection during early childhood.

 

Features of colorectal cancer related to Schistosomiasis:

(1) younger age of onset (may be less than 40 years of age)

(2) more frequent in males (reflecting greater risk of exposure)

(3) more frequent in sigmoid colon and rectum

(4) multifocal distribution (synchronous)

(5) mucinous histology

(6) poor prognosis
