Description

A person having color highlighting done on the hair can suffer a scalp burn if problems occur.

Types of burns that can occur:

(1) chemical burns caused by a strong acid or base used to treat the hair

(2) thermal burn from accidental ignition of volatile solutions coating the hair

(3) thermal burn from overuse of a hair dryer set on "High"

The extent of the burn is often small but can be extensive.

A major hazard is secondary infection of the burn wound. Scalp infections can be serious.

Recommendations to avoid burns:

(1) Be familiar with all of the risks associated with the chemicals being used.

(2) Observe all safety precautions for handling the chemicals.

(3) Avoid the use of open flame or smoking while a volatile solvent is being used.

(4) Use the lowest possible heat setting to get a task done.

(5) Respond promptly to any leak, flame or sign of injury. Rinsing the area with large amounts of cold water will handle most situations. Avoid getting the chemicals into the eyes.

(6) Do not attempt this process if alone.

The hair stylist is also at risk for burn injury, usually on the hands.
