Description

Holdsworth and Mossad develop a scale for evaluating outcome following tendon band fixation of a displaced fracture of the olecranon.

Parameters:

(1) symptoms

(2) range of motion (ROM)

(3) strength (testing flexion and extension with a Cybex II dynamometer)

(4) accuracy of the reduction

Parameter

Finding

Points

symptoms

none

4

pain only if knocked

3

occasional spontaneous pain or clicking

2

frequent or constant pain

1

range of motion

normal

4

loss up to 10 degrees (excellent)

3

loss 11 to 30 degrees (food)

2

loss > 30 degrees (poor)

1

strength on flexion and extension

>= 75% of peak strength shown in opposite normal arm

4

50-75% of normal arm (satisfactory)

3

25 - 50% of normal arm (poor)

2

0 - 25% (very weak)

1

accuracy of the reduction

barely visible (excellent)

4

obvious but no step (satisfactory)

3

up to 2 mm step (fair)

2

> 2 mm step (poor)

total score =

= SUM(points for all 4 parameters)

Interpretation:

• minimum score: 4

• maximum score: 16

• The higher the score the better the outcome.

Total Score

14 - 16

excellent

12 - 13

good

4 - 11

poor
