Description

A prison inmate may attack another with "prison napalm". Because of a higher temperature and increased adherence, the risk of a serious burn is increased.

Prison napalming consists of:

(1) adding sugar (or other solute) to water

(2) heating the water to a rolling boil

(3) throwing the boiling water on the victim

Mechanism:

(1) The addition of solute to water increases the osmolality, which increases the boiling point, meaning that the water is hotter than regular water.

(2) Sugar water is more viscous than tap water, which prolongs adherence.

If you can get a sample of the sugar water used in the attack, then the temperature of the water can be estimated.
