Description

Scabies may present with atypical findings that may be confused with other skin conditions.

Scabies incognito: atypical skin lesions in a patient who is being treated with topical or systemic corticosteroids. This may also be seen in patients receiving other types of immunosuppressive therapy.

Scabies surrepticius refers to scabies masquerading as bullous pemphigoid, malar erythema, prurigo nodularis, pityriasis rosea, urticaria pigmentosa or other skin conditions.

It is important to recognize these forms since:

(1) the skin lesions will be persistent, resisting therapies for the supposed cause

(2) the skin lesions will be source of infection to others
