Description

Scabies herpeticum is crusted scabies with superimposed Herpes simplex. It may be viewed as a form of Kaposi's Varicelliform Eruption (KVE, Herpes simplex infection of a pre-existing dermatosis).

Clinical features:

(1) presence of crusted scabies, with no or minimal pruritis

(2) appearance of vesicles and/or pustules showing Herpes simplex

Crusted scabies is associated with immunodeficiency/immunosuppression (as well as other conditions). In these patients bacterial and fungal infections may occur, including sepsis.

Management can be challenging since several different processes need to be controlled.
