Description

A person may develop a transient infestation with animal mites following contact with an animal with sarcoptic mange.


 

Animals that may be a source:

(1) dog (Sarcoptes scabiei var canis)

(2) cats

(3) cattle

 

Clinical features:

(1) contact with an animal with mange

(2) no history of contact with anyone having scabies or a pruritic rash

(3) onset of a pruritic rash within 1-4 days of contact with the affected animal

(4) presence of papules and vesicles on the arms, shoulders, trunk and thighs

(5) absence of burrows on the hands

(6) skin scrapings are typically negative on the patient but examination of the animal shows evidence of a mite infestation
