Description

Sarcopenia and handgrip strength can help to identify a patient with worse prognosis.

Patient selection: cirrhosis

Sarcopenia or low handgrip strength are associated with:

(1) encephalopathy

(2) increased mortality

Gender

Handgrip Associated with Increased Mortality

female

< 18.8 kg

male

< 27.8 kg

Additional prognostic factors:

(1) reduced serum branched-chain amino acids (< 327 µmol/L)

(2) rapid muscle wasting

(3) elevated blood ammonia

The change in skeletal muscle area per year was associated with mortality. A change less then -3.1% was associated with better survival.
