Description

The SAPS 3 prognostic model consists of 3 boxes scoring various findings on ICU admission. The authors are the SAPS 3 Investigators from across Europe.

Parameters in Box I:

(1) age in years

(2) comorbidities

(3) length of stay in the hospital before admission to ICU

(4) hospital location prior to ICU admission

(5) use of vasoactive drugs prior to ICU admission

Parameters in Box II:

(1) ICU admissions planned vs unplanned

(2) reasons for ICU admission

(3) surgical status at ICU admission

(4) anatomical site of surgery

(5) acute infection at ICU admission

where:

• Points are assigned for each comorbidity present according to the footnote.

• A patient with both hematologic cancer and AIDS is assigned "double points." This is interpreted as being 2 * (6 + 8) = 28.

score for Box II =

= SUM(points for all 5 parameters) + 16

where:

• 16 points was added to avoid a negative SAPS 3 score. This might not succeed in all circumstances. It might be easier to make any negative SAPS 3 score 0.

• If both cardiac rhythm disorder and seizures are present then -4 is assigned.

• If more than one reason for ICU admission is present then all are scored.
