Haider et al reported a simple clinical score for evaluating a trauma patient. This can help to identify a patient at risk for admission to the ICU and death. The authors are from Westchester Medical Center and New York Medical College.
Patient selection: trauma patient
Parameters:
(1) age of the patient in years (A)
(2) shock index, (S)
(3) Glasgow coma scale (G, GCS), from 3 to 15
shock index =
= (heart rate) / (systolic blood pressure)
Parameter
Finding
Points
age in years
<= 55 years
4
> 55 years
0
shock index
< 1
3
>= 1
0
Glasgow coma scale
(GCS)
total score =
= SUM(points for all 3 parameters)
Interpretation:
• minimum score: 3
• maximum score: 22
• Each point of increase is associated with an odds ratio of 0.822 for mortality.
