Description

A high-rise building can be a safe place to be during a hurricane under certain circumstances.

Two hazards of hurricanes are:

(1) high winds, which can propel debris as projectiles

(2) high water

Wind speed tends to be higher at higher elevations.

Sheltering in place is feasible if:

(1) The building was built to code for hurricane resistance.

(2) The windows meet requirements for hurricane resistance.

(3) Evacuation has not been ordered.

Recommendations:

(1) Go to a floor above the level of the storm surge.

(2) Stay in a hallway or interior room away from windows.

(3) Avoid taking an elevator.

(4) Remove furniture and objects from balconies.

(5) Close windows and outside doors completely.

(6) Have sufficient supplies (food, water, batteries, medicines, etc) for a week.
