Safety checklist for a person crossing ice:
(1) Never travel alone.
(2) Everyone should carry a means of communication such as a cell phone.
(3) Instruments for measuring ice thickness and quality (auger or drill, tape measure, etc.)
(4) Rope that floats.
(5) Personal flotation device (PFD)
(6) Ice rescue pick
(7) Suitable clothing, avoiding hip boots or waders that might fill with water.
(8) Quick release straps on backpacks.
(9) Map, compass and GPS.
(10) Emergency survival gear (in case of a blizzard)
Knowledge:
(1) Your weight and the weight of equipment, especially if using a snowmobile or vehicle.
(2) Recent weather conditions
(3) Inform someone of itinerary.
(4) Ability to read ice quality.
Physical condition:
(1) Good condition without active comorbid conditions.
(2) Ability to swim.
(3) Avoidance of intoxication.
