Groceries need to be transported carefully to minimize risk from enteric pathogens.
Foods that may harbor enteric pathogens include:
(1) poultry
(2) meat
(3) eggs
(4) vegetables
(5) seafood
(6) dairy products
(7) other animal products
(8) potato salad, cole slaw or similar foods
Risk for bacterial proliferation and contamination:
(1) prolonged transport
(2) allowing food to thaw or to get warm, especially in hot weather
(3) leakage of liquids
(4) damage to packaging and food
(5) allowing foods to freeze that shouldn't, especially in winter
Ways to reduce risk:
(1) double bag meats and poultry
(2) have a means to keep refrigerated foods cold
(3) keep foods like eggs from freezing in the winter
(4) minimize damage to food during transport
