Description

A vehicle that is out of control is often referred to as a runaway.


 

A runaway vehicle is out of control, which may involve:

(1) inability to stop due to brake failure

(2) inability to steer

(3) inability to slow down due to engine malfunction

 

Vehicles that can runaway:

(1) car or bus

(2) truck

(3) train

(4) boat or ship

 

Risk factors:

(1) poor maintenance

(2) mechanical or structural failure

(3) steep slope or rapid current/tide

(4) inclement weather

 

Consequences:

(1) none, if the vehicle can be stopped without impact, as with a runaway truck ramp in the mountains

(2) impact, which is often destructive to vehicle and arresting structure

(3) spill of contents (important for truck, train or ship)
