Scully reported the simple RULE acronym to aid in the early recognition of oral cancer.
Application: suspect an oral cancer if there is a mucosal lesion that has one or more of the findings listed in the acronym.
Acronym:
(1) R: red and/or white lesion
(2) U: ulcer
(3) L: lump
(4) E: exceeding 3 weeks duration
The list is not all inclusive but serves as a starting point. Any other suspicious lesion that is unexplained should be asked about.
