Description

Lutgens et al identified risk factors for colorectal cancer in a patient with inflammatory bowel disease. This can help to identify a patient who may benefit from closer surveillance. The authors are from University Medical Center Utrecht, University of California Los Angeles and University Hospital Gasthuisberg in Leuven.

Parameters:

(1) type of inflammatory bowel disease (Crohns vs ulcerative colitis)

(2) primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC)

(3) extent of disease

(4) post-inflammatory polyps

Microscopic Extent of Colonic Surface Involvement

Extent

< 50%

limited

>= 50%

extensive

High risk patterns - one or more of the following:

(1) primary sclerosing cholangitis

(2) Crohn's disease AND extensive disease AND post-inflammatory polyps

(3) ulcerative colitis AND (extensive disease AND/OR post-inflammatory polyps)

A patient who is not high risk is low risk.
