Description

Ewig et al reported a rule for predicting mortality of a hospital-treated patient with community-acquired pneumonia (CAP). This can help to identify a patient who may benefit from more aggressive management. The authors are from the University of Bonn.

Patient selection: community-acquired pneumonia, admitted to hospital

Parameters:

(1) heart rate in beats per minute

(2) systolic blood pressure in mm Hg

(3) serum LDH in U/L (reference range not given)

= SUM(points for all 3 parameters)

Interpretation:

minimum score: 0

maximum score: 3

A score >= 2 was associated with mortality.

Performance:

The score has a sensitivity of 77% and specificity of 75%, with a negative predictive value of 93%.
