Description

Vidyasagar reviewed the NOSEP score of Mahieu et al. He suggested a "rule of 14" to help identify nosocomial sepsis in a neonate in the NICU. The author is from the University of Illinois at Chicago.

Patient selection: newborn infant in the NICU

Rule of 14:

(1) > 14 days of total parenteral nutrition (TPN)

(2) > 14 mg/L serum CRP

(3) <= 140,000 per µL platelet count

(4) > 14 NOSEP score

The presence of a high NOSEP score or several of the other findings identifies a newborn who may have nosocomial sepsis.
