Description

Zika virus may be acquired by a number of routes.

Routes for infection of Zika virus:

(1) mosquito bite (Aedes aegypti or Aedes albopictus)

(2) transplancental from mother to fetus (during pregnancy or perinatal)

(3) through sexual intercourse

(4) through blood transfusion

(5) healthcare exposure

There has been no record of transmission by breastfeeding. Since many cases of Zika virus infection are subclinical this may not exclude the possibility. However, continued breastfeeding is recommended.

Sharing injection drug paraphernalia would be an additional route not listed.
