Description

A rooster is a male chicken that can be territorial and attack humans who get too close.


Group: gallinaceous bird (landfowl)

Species: Gallus gallus

 

Sources of injury:

(1) spur

(2) beak

(3) claws

 

In cock fighting a metal spur may be added which can serious injury.

 

Small children are most at risk of being attacked.

 

Most common sites of injury:

(1) legs

(2) eyes

(3) head

 

Complications:

(1) bleeding, which can be fatal if the victim is anticoagulated and a large vein is opened

(2) infection

(3) eye injury

(4) psychologic stress after being attacked

(5) retained spur

(6) skull fracture (in small children)
