Description

The diagnosis of functional abdominal bloating (FAB) or distention (FAD) can be made using the Rome IV criteria.


Criteria for FAB or FAD - all of the following:

(1) recurrent bloating and/or distention that occurs on average >= 1 time per week

(2) abdominal bloating and/or distention predominates over other symptoms (such as pain or bowel movement abnormalities)

(3) does not meet criteria for other functional disorders (irritable bowel syndrome, constipation, diarrhea, postprandial distress syndrome, etc)

 

Temporal criteria:

(4) onset of symptoms >= 6 months before diagnosis

(5) criteria present for past 3 months

 

In FAD the patient may have an increase in abdominal girth.
