The Levator Ani Syndrome can be diagnosed using the Rome IV criteria.
Criteria for levator ani syndrome:
(1) chronic or recurrent rectal pain or aching for the past 3 months
(2) episodes >= 30 minutes
(3) tenderness during posterior traction placed on the puborectalis
(4) exclusion of alternative diagnoses
(5) onset >= 6 months before the diagnosis
where:
• The diagnosis requires exclusion of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), prostatitis (in a male), intramuscular abscess, anal fissure, thrombosed hemorrhoids, coccygodynia, and major structural alterations of the pelvic floor.
Unspecified functional anorectal pain is diagnosed if there is tenderness with traction on the puborectalis.
