Description

Nonretentive fecal incontinence in a pediatric patient can be diagnosed using the Rome IV criteria.


Criteria for nonretentive fecal incontinence:

(1) symptoms >= 1 month

(2) developmental age > 4 years

(3) defecation in places considered inappropriate for society or culture

(4) no evidence of fecal retention

(5) normal defecation frequencies and gastrointestinal motility

(6) exclusion of another diagnosis after an appropriate medical evaluation

 

The patent should be observed for evidence of an emotional disorder (suppressed anger, stress) or abuse.
