Infant dyschezia can be diagnosed using Rome IV criteria.
Dyschezia = difficult or painful defecation
Symptoms may include:
(1) screaming
(2) crying
(3) turning red or purple in the face
Duration of episode: usually 10-20 minutes
Diagnostic criteria for infant dyschezia
(1) age < 9 months
(2) straining and/or crying that starts >= 10 minutes before attempting (successful or unsuccessful) passage of soft stool
(3) absence of other health issues
The condition usually resolves spontaneously within a few weeks.
