Description

Rome IV provides criteria for the diagnosis of globus, which often is a diagnosis of exclusion.


Criteria for a diagnosis of globus - all of the following:

(1) symptoms onset >= 6 months

(2) symptoms during past 3 months

(3) persistent or intermittent, nonpainful sensation of a lump or foreign body in throat >= 1 time per week

(4) absence of dysphagia or odynophagia

(5) absence of gastric inlet patch in the proximal esophagus

(6) exclusion of gastroesophageal reflux (GERD) or eosinophilic esophagitis

(7) exclusion of major esophageal motor disorders (achalasia, diffuse esophageal spasm, jackhammer esophagus, absence of peristalsis)

 

The sensation tends to occur between meals.
