Description

Functional dysphagia can be diagnosed using the Rome IV criteria.


Diagnostic features of functional dysphagia - all of the following:

(1) sensation of food (solid or liquid) sticking or lodging in the esophagus or passing abnormally

(2) episodes occur >= 1 time per week

(3) onset of symptoms was >= 6 months ago

(4) symptoms have been present for the past 3 months

(5) exclusion of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) or eosinophilic esophagitis

(6) exclusion of a major esophageal motor disorder

(7) exclusion of esophageal mucosal or structural abnormality that can explain the findings

(8) exclusion of other conditions in the differential diagnosis (globus, xerostomia, oropharngeal disease, etc)
