Fecal incontinence can be diagnosed using the Rome IV criteria.
Criteria for fecal incontinence:
(1) recurrent uncontrolled passage of fecal material
(2) duration >= 3 months
(3) developmental age >= 4 years
Fecal staining of underwear may be included depending on severity.
Additional research criteria:
(1) onset >= 6 months ago
(2) >= 2 episodes in the past 4 weeks (wording "2-4" episodes but doubt the upper limit)
Evaluation should include assessments for:
(1) hemorrhoids
(2) anal fissure or fistula
(3) damage to the anal sphincter, including post-vaginal delivery
(4) rectal prolapse
