Description

Centrally-mediated abdominal pain syndrome (CAPS, CMAPS) can be diagnosed using the Rome IV criteria.


Diagnostic criteria for centrally-mediated abdominal pain syndrome:

(1) continuous or nearly continuous abdominal pain

(2) no or occasional association of pain with a physiological event (defecation, etaing, etc)

(3) some impact on work, social activities or activities of daily living

(4) not feigned (not malingering)

(5) exclusion of other causes of abdominal pain

(6) onset of symptoms >= 6 months prior to diagnosis

(7) symptoms present for the past 3 months

 

Additional findings may include:

(1) psychiatric comorbidity

(2) some gastrointestinal dysfunction
