The definition of biliary pain is important in the identification of functional disorders of the biliary system.
Features of biliary pain - all of the following:
(1) located in the epigastrium and/or right upper quadrant
(2) builds up to a steady level
(3) lasts 30 minutes or longer
(4) occurs at different intervals, usually not daily
(5) interrupts daily activities and/or causes the patient to go the Emergency Department
(6) not significantly related to bowel movements
(7) not significantly relieved by postural change or gastric acid suppression
Biliary pain may:
(1) be associated with nausea and vomiting
(2) wake the patient from sleep
(3) radiate to the back
(4) radiate to the right infra-scapular area
