Description

Gan et al identified risk factors for a surgical site infection (SSI) following surgery for a head and neck cancer. These can help to identify a patient who may benefit from more aggressive management. The authors are from multiple institutions in China.

Patient selection: status post surgery for a head and neck cancer

Risk factors of surgical site infection:

(1) diabetes mellitus (OR 3.2)

(2) floor of mouth as site of primary tumor (OR 4.2)

(3) preoperative radiation therapy (OR 3.0)

(4) flap failure (OR 4.6)

(5) bilateral neck dissections (OR 3.3)

The risk of surgical site infection increases with the number of risk factors present.
