Description

Sharma et al used risk stratification trees to identify patients with pre-osteoarthritis of the knee who are at risk for developing slow gait speed. The authors are from multiple institutions in the United States participating in the Multicenter Osteoarthritis Study (MOST).

Patient selection: pre-osteoarthritis of the knees (without radiographic disease)

Outcome: increased risk for slow gait at 10 years (incidence 13.5 to 29%)

Risk factors for the entire group:

(1) age > 66.5 years

(2) WOMAC physical function score > 23.7 (range 0 to 68)

Risk factors for the subgroup with age <= 66.5, WOMAC <= 23.7, no college, limited engagement in strenuous sports:

(1) obese (BMI >= 30)

(2) high depressive symptoms
